Incorporated in 1972, strategically located along the west coast of India, CSL is one of the few shipyards in the world which caters to the commercial and defense shipbuilding as well as commercial and defense ship repair, yard also has a Marine Engineering Training Institute, Skill Development Center and a NABL accredited Laboratory. 

The shipyard has built more than 600 merchant and naval ships including nuclear powered icebreakers and nuclear powered missile battle cruisers, space tracking ships and special purpose ships. The machine building division of the yard is capable of producing heat-exchange equipment for nuclear power plants, launchers, boiler equipment, marine propellers, shaftings, marine valves, etc.
