India asks Russia to accelerate the delivery of S 400 missile system following tensions with China
According to news published by the South China Morning Post website on June 25, 2020, India asks Russia to accelerate the process for the delivery of Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air defense missile system after the escalating tensions between China and India border.
China continues to deploy aircraft, helicopter and drones along the border with India including J-20 stealth fighter jets, Z-20 helicopters, modified J-10C and J-11B fighter jets, as well as Wing Loong II armed drones. According to Russian military experts, the Russian S-400 air defense missile system is able to detect and destroy modern aircraft and helicopters in service with the Chinese Air Force.
According to the Russian Press Agency TASS, Russia has planned to deliver the first batch of S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) air defense missile systems to India before late 2021.
In November 2018, the contract for the delivery of Russian S-400 Triumph surface-to-air (SAM) systems to India was signed in Russia. India could receive four regiments of S-400 with ammunition and spare parts. A regular S-400 battalion reportedly consists of at least eight launchers with 32 missiles and a mobile command post.
The S-400 Triumf (NATO code: SA-21 Growler) 5P85TE2 long-range surface-air missile system entered service with the Russian Armed Forces on April 28, 2007, replacing the S-300. The system is produced by Almaz-Antey. The S-400 is intended to engage, ECM, radar-picket, director area, reconnaissance, strategic and tactical aircraft, tactical and theatre ballistic missiles, medium-range ballistic missiles and other current and future air attack assets at a maximum range of 400 km, and at an altitude of up to 30 km.
The S-400 Triumf can also engage Tomahawk cruise missiles and other types of missiles, including precision-guided ones, as well as AWACS aircraft, at ranges of up to 400 km. It is believed to be able to detect stealth aircraft and other targets at all altitudes of their combat employment. This air defense missile system can simultaneously engage 36 targets.
